Addendum: John Gruber quotes a piece by Hunter S. Thompson, the king of Gonzo, regarding the Nixon-McGovern race in 1972. Nice read! Hope Gruber’s one sentence comment turns out to be more solid than wishful thinking. The following is for those of you who don’t know what happened back in 1972.

I think the left, those of us that identified with progressive values in this country have everything to learn from how the Obama campaign did this, and have to apply these techniques anew to all our concerns, and all the issues that we care about. If we do that, I think, we’ll begin to set the agenda in the country like in a way that we haven’t done in 40 years. A.G.
